Concern Worldwide
Founded in 1968 to bring emergency relief to devastated and famine-stricken region of Biafra during Nigeria’s civil war, Concern Worldwide has risen to become one of the world’s premiere organizations fighting abject poverty. With a staff nearly 4000 strong, Concern works in 24 of the poorest nations, including primarily those ranked in the bottom 40 of the United Nations Human Development Report.
Concern’s programs focus on establishing equality. They target the most vulnerable populations—including women and girls, orphans and working children, migrants and minorities, and families devastated by disease and disability. These groups are most likely to be excluded from existing national support services. Program areas include:
- Education
Programs expand education at all levels by building and rehabilitating schools, equipping classrooms, training teachers, and providing vocational and adult literacy training. - Emergency Relief
Programs provide immediate support and shelter, long term rehabilitation of infrastructure and homes, and economic assistance to reestablish jobs and markets. - Health and Nutrition
Programs increase access to nutritional support centers and targeted maternal and child health care services, while also leading HIV/AIDS support, prevention, and advocacy. - Livelihoods
Programs provide enhance farmers’ output with supplies and training, assist in business development through savings and loan programs, and expand access to markets. - Water and Sanitation
Programs build clean water systems and latrines, as well as training on healthy hygiene practices.
Concern Worldwide US is the United States affiliate of Concern Worldwide. Like its parent organization, Concern Worldwide US has an outstanding record of financial responsibility. 93.9% of its total expenses go toward international programs, with only 2.7% and 3.4% of total expenses spent on fundraising and administration respectively.
