Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases
The Global Network for Neglected Tropical Diseases is a major initiative of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, a Washington D.C. based 501(c) 3 non-profit organization working to end global suffering from Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs). NTDs are a group of parasitic diseases that affect over 1 billion of the poorest people worldwide and result in disfigurement and disability, impaired nutrition, pregnancy complications, and missed educational and vocational opportunities. Through the work of the Global Network, it costs just $0.50 to prevent an individual from all NTD’s for an entire year.
The Global Network is truly a Network—bringing together researchers, pharmaceutical corporations, philanthropists, global health agencies, and governments to generate an efficient and comprehensive approach to tackling NTDs. The Global Network’s approach consists of:
- Advocacy
The Global Network coordinates efforts to educate policymakers and the public about NTDs in order to develop political will for strong NTD policy and legislation. - Resource Mobilization
The Global Network uses its deep expertise and extensive partnerships to coordinate between donors and NTD treatment programs to increase and sustain investments, while ensuring that funds are put to the most effective use. The Global Network has been pivotal in securing ongoing drug donations from several major pharmaceutical companies, as well as increased governmental financial contributions to fight NTDs. - Action
The Global Network and its international partners work in every major developing world region to develop efficient and effective approaches to NTD treatment distribution. Through a grant from the Gates Foundation, the Global Network is leading efforts to maximize the financial sustainability of these treatment campaigns.
The Global Network has an outstanding record of financial responsibility, dedicating 100% of donations directly to program services, amounting to $2.28 million in 2007 and $3.14 million as of Q3 2008. The Sabin Vaccine Institute exhibits comparable excellence, reporting an administrative and fundraising expense ratio of just 5.3% of $14.66 million in expenses for 2008.
