Millennium Promise
Millennium Promise ranks among the world’s leading organizations specifically focused on achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). By bringing together leaders in science, business, and government, Millennium Promise has been able to develop innovative, holistic, and high impact programs that address poverty on multiple fronts. Millennium Promise further provides a powerful and expertly-informed voice for the MDGs at economic and development forums and summits around the world.
The Millennium Villages Project—Millennium Promise’s flagship program—is a joint effort with Columbia University’s Earth Institute and the United Nations Development Program. Reaching over 500,000 people in 80 villages across 10 African countries, the Millennium Villages Project empowers and transforms entire villages by creating sustainable and scalable community-led programs specialized for each village’s needs. Village programs directly target the MDGs and include:
- Agriculture and Environment
Programs provide higher-yield seeds and fertilizer, train farmers on improved techniques, and connect them to markets. - Business Development
Programs enhance access to markets, increase credit and finance opportunities, and promote investments. - Education
Programs improve school facilities and train teachers, provide meal programs to increase enrollment, and introduce technology and internet. - Gender Equality
Programs facilitate increased school attendance by girls, reproductive health services, economic empowerment through business opportunities, and political empowerment in village committees. - Health and Nutrition
Programs provide disease prevention, improved access to clinical services and advanced maternal health care, enhanced nutrition through agriculture and school feeding programs. - Infrastructure
Programs work with private partners to introduce cellular and internet connectivity, clean water and sanitation systems, electricity, and improved transport.
Millennium Promise is funded primarily by public support. They demonstrate a track record of financial responsibility, spending $25.7 million on program expenses out of $29.9 million total expenses for FY 2008. 11.8% of total expenses were administrative, and 2.1% of expenses were due to fundraising.
